The Octopus Literary Salon
2101 Webster St @ 22nd, Oakland, California 94612
For our 27th installment — and final meeting before summer break — we'll be discussing DUST, by Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor (Novel, Kenya), which we postponed earlier in the year. Owuor's absorbing first novel – which has been shortlisted for the Folio prize – is set against the backdrop of the 2007 presidential and parliamentary elections in Kenya. In this dazzling novel you will find the entirety of human experience — tearshed, bloodshed, lust, love — in staggering proportions.
On the first week of the month we meet over eats/drinks (available for purchase) to discuss the latest, hottest, award-winning, best-selling books out of Africa. All you have to do to join is read as much of the book as you can and show up ...prepared for a lively (but respectful) conversation. You may attend as few or as many sessions as you'd like.
The venue is one of the East Bay's premiere cafés/bookstores/literary spaces 4.5 blocks (0.3 mile) from 19th Street BART in Oakland. PLEASE SUPPORT our generous hosts by enjoying the wide variety of options available for purchase: Beer, wine, tea, espresso drinks, delicious salads and sandwiches, treats.
