The first wave of globalization in the late 19th century kickstarted a period of rapid growth and development in modern history through significant improvements in international trade relations, factor mobility, and economic integration. In the early-mid 20th century, the turn away from globalization towards protectionist ideals, overall, proved economically disastrous. For the last few decades, we have been riding on a second wave of globalization characterized by technology and FDI; however, recent events such as US diplomatic and trade relations, US-China tariffs, and the upcoming finalization of Brexit, seem to strongly indicate a reversal in the trend of global economic integration.

UEA's Academic Affairs will be hosting an open-to-all economic salon on the role of globalization and deglobalization in modern society. What are the causes, key current affairs, and implications of the overarching trend of deglobalization? How should our attitude to globalization vs. deglobalization differ in the context of two very different time periods? What are potential paths international policymakers should or can take, moving forward?

The salon will be led by a group of presenters from Academic Affairs, and then open up to general debate towards the end of the event! All majors and years welcome! There will be free pizza :)

Date: Thursday, March 14th
